Tour to the desert in Morocco

My trip to Morocco 🇲🇦 was not very well planned… To be honest, I bought the first ticket I saw on internet and I ended up in Marrakech. Coming to the desert was always a dream so I could not miss it in Morocco.

Marrakech is a lovely city and here you almost forget you are in a Muslim country because there are a lot of tourists around. When I was backing back home I tried to pick “the most decent clothes” I have: long skirts, pants, large dresses… But I was shocked when I arrived and I saw everyone wearing shorts like we do in Europe. Ahahah

5 days tour with 2 days in the desert with Marrakech Tour Toutal Sayd

I did an organized tour to the desert with Marrakech tour Toutal Sayd and I have to admit everything went pretty good (I was a bit tired of planning every detail of my trips and this tour was heaven for me).

During 5 days I went to a lot of experiences with 3 unknown girls… Africa and the desert are such a special part of the world. However, I have to admit August might not be the best season to come here because the temperatures are very very high in the country.

Argan oil
Argan oil

We start the tour with a stop in an Argan shop and a “small factory” where we saw how they extract the argan and how they use it for cooking and for making cosmetic products. I have to say I fell in love for the argan oil already 😋 It is so soft and it hydrates very well the skin.

After a Couscous, time to explore the Ait Benhaddou castle where many movies were filmed (such as Gladiator). This small village is adorable and there are many spots to explore and to take amazing pictures.

Driving a car around is amazing. The landscape is a piece of heaven and the Atlas Mountains are definitely a MUST SEE in Morocco.

Next day: Togdha Gorge to start the day.

This place is a mix of a lot of things. People washing their vegetables, people enjoying the water to refresh themselves and tourists taking pictures of everything. Ahahha

After this spot: we continue the road to arrive to the campsite where we will be sleeping.

Short stop to buy typical clothes and get the morocco ink tattoo (this tattoo lasts for 4/5 days). Tea to recharge batteries and let’s ride a camel in the Sahara desert 🐫

Actually riding a camel is even more painful than riding a horse (my *** was hurting as hell after the ride but it is always an experience).

Desert

Merzouga desert!!! We finally arrived after so many hours. To be honest everything is super western world: we had a big bedroom tent, a bathroom and even a tent for meals. The experience was great specially because of the food, the typical music and the dances that lasted for long. You can see a lot of little animals around and I even had the chance to have a super rainy night in the desert ( what an unexpected thing).

However, if you are looking for a very authentic tour to the desert you might find it in less touristic countries. 😋

Next day, it was all about enjoying the sunrise in the desert and the road back to Marrakech. I am still not tired of checking my pictures of the landscape of this country.

I will talk more about Marrakech in my next post about Morocco.

Organized tour to the desert includes:

  • Pick up and drop off from/to the airport
  • 2 nights in Marrakech in a hotel with breakfast included
  • Guide during the desert tour and in Marrakech
  • 2 nights in the desert, 1 in a hotel and the other one in a tent (breakfast and dinner are also included)

Price: 140€

PS: I did not stay in 5 start hotels 👍 BUTTTT I think the price was reasonable.

You can find cheaper and more expensive tours. It will depend how exigent you are and when you are coming (I came during high season) so I guess I paid a little bit more.

About security and traveling on your own in Morocco:

Marrakech is a very very touristic city. I did not have any problem walking on my own in the city during the day. At night, I avoided being on my own but in the main square Jemaa El-Fnaa there are a lot of people until late night. Nothing seemed very dangerous to me. Men talk to you on the street and try to get your attention but nothing really impossible to handle.

However, the less touristic cities can be a bit different. If you are traveling on your own, be conscious. 👌 I might develop this subject on my next post about Morocco.

I hope you like this post. Keep following my adventures in Africa.
