Next stop: Australia

EN III (versão portuguesa abaixo)

YES: As you might have known, I am moving to Australia! The kangaroo land is about to become my home for the next months (If everything goes right and if the kangaroos do not kick me out of the country).

I have always been passionated by this country and its landscapes. Now, I am finally about to find out how is the Aussie’s land!!!

Why Australia?

A lot of people asked me: why Australia? Why going so far?
Firstly: why not Australia!

The first time I thought about moving to Australia it was when I finished my first work contract, back in 2014. However, I found a new job a month later and the idea of moving to Australia disappeared very very fast.

Australia came to my mind again when I felt I needed to change my life. :S And when I finally found courage and left my job, everything became super clear: after my South America trip instead of going back to Paris, I would simply move to Australia.

I guess it is easy to move around the world when you are not used to live in your own country. Although, I liked France very much, I felt it was time to go to somewhere else/ explore something else.

And Australia because…
  • It is English speaking country;
  • It has a develop and grow economy;
  • It is hot and it is known for the amazing beaches (After Paris I need some Vitamina Sea);
  • It is a country with a lot of opportunities for young people.

Are you not afraid to go to a country so far?

Fear is not really the adjective to describe my current feeling. I am conscious it is a big change and what I really want is everything to work out. BUT, as I always say: I have done worse and I have lived much more difficult moments. If things go wrong: I will find a solution.

It will not be the end of the world. 😀

Do you have anyone there?

I have one very good friend from Portugal living in Melbourne and I have a couple of travel friends in other cities (Sydney, Brisbane, Perth…). Having someone around is always nice at the beginning to understand how everything works in the country.

What are you going to do there?

After a year traveling what I really need is to settle down, find a job and have a normal life in order to recharge batteries. You can not image how tiring and stressful traveling can be. I do not remember staying more than 2 weeks in the same place for the past year…
By the way, I am going with a working holiday visa (a lot of people asked me this question). See below some useful information about this visa.

WORKING HOLIDAY VISA TO AUSTRALIA (462)

before the trip

1. What is a Working Holiday visa (462)?
It is a visa that allows you to travel and work for a year in Australia. Although you cannot have the same employer for more than 6 months. The visa can be extended for a second year (see the conditions).

2. Who can ask for it?
You might check if your country has an agreement with Australia for this visa – most of the Europeans countries do. Everyone from 18 to 30 years old can apply for the visa.

Portuguese people: There are just 200 visas granted per year.

3. Where can I get the visa?
Usually you can apply for the visa online through the Australian government website. Again: Portuguese application is made by post office. Everything should be sent to the Australian Embassy in Germany and the process is usually fast (from 1 month to 3 months).

4. Which documents will I need?
It will depend of your country again. As a Portuguese citizen:

  1. University degree;
  2. Sufficient funds;
  3. A letter of support from the government;
  4. Health insurance;
  5. English exam.

5. How much is the visa?
Visa is: $440 (around 300€)
However, paying for the application does not guarantee you the visa.

You can also find more information about the visa details in the official website. I hope you liked this post. Leave me a message if you have any questions about this post and the visa to Australia. I will be happy to help you if I can. 😀
