How expensive is to study in the US

The question that most people ask me when I was backpacking: How much did you spend on it? Now that I am about to start my studies in the US, the same old question is back…

As I have said several times: Some people dream about buying a house (which I hope I can also do it one day), others dream about studying in the US (me since 2012)… Studying in the United States, especially a private university like the one I chose (University of Chicago) is expensive!

On the QS website, you can find an average of costs for the top 10 universities in 2018. And you know what, mine is on the list!!!!

The values change annually to the masters BUT I would say a masters degree is around € 11 000 – € 43 000. In general, the more technical or more demand in the market, the higher are the fees.

So, it is impossible to pay that… – you might say

Well, take it easy – It is possible. I used to think like that but:

  1. There are public universities which are cheaper
  2. There are scholarships
  3. There are jobs (especially, research and lecturing), as a student we are not able to work outside campus

If you are curious to know how all of process of becoming a student in the US, check the article How to get a student visa to the US. In regards to money, I did not have all the required funds so see below what I did…

In my case:

  • I used my personal savings (remember that I worked for 4 years)
  • I took a student loan (I did not want to but I had no other option)
  • My friends and family helped a bit

Would you like me to write about cheaper universities and how to reduce costs while studying?
